A Day at Adventure Landing’s Shipwreck Island | Summer Bucket List Series

July 19, 2016 By Amy West

A Day at Adventure Landing's Shipwreck Island
If you are looking to achieve the perfect Florida summer, you are undoubtedly going to be spending a lot of time in the water. Naturally the beach will be on the list, but if you are truly looking for some thrills and refreshment, you will head straight to the nearest waterpark. For North Floridians, that path leads directly to the regions largest amusement park, Adventure Landing.

I grew up on the First Coast, so Adventure Landing is fully ingrained in my childhood memories. I remember trips after school with friends, all night lock ins, and plenty of time chasing my friends around the laser tag arena. Just like it’s original young visitors, Adventure Landing has grown up over the years adding more and more attractions for the whole family. Whether it’s go-karts, roller coasters, putt putt, or thrilling water slides you are seeking, you can be sure they’ve got fun covered.
A giant ship spouts gallons of water on guests young and old.
Now that we have our own kids, it’s a fact that summer is not complete, unless we have made our proverbial splash in the park’s Shipwreck Island. Here are a few of our favorite spots in the park.

The Pirate’s Play Village

Even though Adventure Landing has evolved through the years, it’s not without it’s nostalgia. There was a time the entire park was Pirate themed. Today it reflects a more cosmic atmosphere, however the remnants of Pirates remain in The Pirate Play Village. Water spouts from a giant ship filled with colorful slides and hidey holes for children to explore. Connected to the ship is a looming multi level Pirate fortress that leads to larger intermediate slides for older children and adults. The entire Village is housed in a shallow pool of water no deeper than a few feet in some areas. Parents encircle the play area on the pool deck observing the crazy antics of their offspring while soaking up the summer sun or noshing on a hot dog from the refreshment stand nearby.

This is by far probably the most populated area of the park, a great place to chill out after braving the 4 Extreme slides the park has to offer.

Wave Pool

Enter the 50,000 gallon wave pool and ride the 3 to 4 foot waves with a hundred of your new best friends. Our kids love the wave pool, and thanks to the fully stocked supply of life vests, even little London can get in on the fun.

The Little St. Johns River

Adventure Landing’s aptly named lazy river winds it’s way around the Pirate’s Play Village and provides ample opportunity to spy out the next attraction on your list. Grab a tube and lay back as you meander your way through waterfalls and under several of the park’s colorful slides.
Amy West and daughter enjoy the park's lazy river
We couldn’t bring our go pro on any of the Xtreme slides so you’ll have to check them out for yourself. With names like The Rage, Hydro Half Pipe, and The Eye of the Storm, you know you’re in for an exciting ride! Visit for a day, or make it an action packed summer with the season pass.

Until then…

Enjoy the Journey!

5 ” Firsts” in Montana

May 18, 2015 By Amy West

Horse in Montana
This spring I dusted off my boots, donned my most western hat, and slid into some denim for a trip out West. My journey this time was the wilds of Montana. I was honored to be invited, along with 9 other journalists, by Firehouse Subs to take part in a multi day press trip full of adventure, good times, and the opportunity to get to know the company from the inside out. This was my first time to Montana, and I have to say, it was the trip of a lifetime. Here were a few “firsts” I experienced along the way….

Horses in Montana

1. First Time Beholding the Wild West
I consider it a great privilege to have traveled literally around the globe. I’ve experienced many foreign lands, and much of the US. From Texas to California I’ve seen expansive landscapes, but truly Montana is in a class all it’s own. Rugged mountains, and sweeping plains stretch out as far as the eye  can see. It’s a land as savage as it is beautiful. A place you can let your imagination run wild. Over the few days I was a guest at privately owned Bell Cross Ranch, I was able to tour quite a bit of the 9,000 acres within the properties boundaries. It was Epic! Here’s a little taste.

Longhorn in Montana

I’m no stranger to cattle. My Dad is a cattle farmer in Kentucky. However in Ky, we don’t have so many bears, and mountain lions. We were warned many times not to wander off alone for walks. You never know what kind of wildlife might decide to join you for a stroll.

Bear Den sign in Montana

These gorgeous yellow flowers were in bloom all throughout the ranch. It was so tempting to go frolic through them. Needless to say, there were plenty of photos taken of these beauties.

2. First Time Witnessing Mounted Shooting
Montana is a place where the traditions of the Old West are still cherished. One way is through the sport of Mounted Shooting. One of the experiences we participated in was a showcase of the sport by two World Champions and the opportunity to try it out ourselves. I opted out since I was 6 months pregnant, however I did get to shoot the guns. Worried about the horses? Don’t be, these guys were specially trained, and didn’t even flinch at the gun shots. They also had their own nifty pair of earplugs. The guns were loaded with blanks and the gunpowder was enough to pop a balloon. All the fun, with non of the risks.

I was pretty proud of myself as you can see. Although I do admit walking on two legs put me at quite the advantage next to my peers.

3. First Time Clay Shooting
Clay shooting made the list of recreations we were able to try, along with tomahawk throwing, horseshoes, and corn hole. I wasn’t so great at the last three, but discovered I might just be a natural with the rifle. The first four out I nailed. Not too bad for a first timer. Maybe I should stop while I’m ahead…

4. First Time Observing How Firehouse Gives Back
One of the most meaningful opportunities we had during the trip was traveling to Bozeman, Montana where Firehouse Sub’s Public Safety Foundation gave away over $100,000 in equipment to the local fire stations. Hearing first hand from the leadership of these stations really made it all come together. Through the generous donations of the company, and the participation of local stores engaging the community to give back, Firehouse has given millions of dollars worth of equipment to Firehouses and Police Stations all over the U.S. They have also been large participants in disaster recovery efforts after some of the biggest natural disasters in recent U.S. history such as hurricane Katrina. Coming from Jacksonville, the hometown of the original Firehouse Subs, I learned that our local first responders have been some of the biggest recipients. It made it personal knowing that if someone I knew or loved was in an accident, it’s very likely some of the lifesaving equipment used would be that which was generously provided by the foundation.

5. First Time Tasting Firehouse’s New Cold Heroes
A trip with Firehouse Subs wouldn’t be complete without getting to taste a whole lot of delicious subs. We learned in detail about Firehouse’s commitment to quality, hearty portions, and of course amazing flavor. I’ve historically held a soft spot in my heart for the Hook and Ladder, but after tasting 5 more of their hot subs, I can confidently say I have a few more favorites. Fans of the restaurant will also be pleased to hear that Firehouse is continually expanding and meeting the demands of their customers. During our trip they rolled out their new line of cold subs coming late 2015. In addition to their famous hot subs, Firehouse looks to meet the need of those seeking something that’s easier to grab and go for later. They are also using the opportunity to reinvent their entire catering menu with the new cold sub options. Right now they are testing the new Cold Heroes menu in a select few stores, but you can look for the full roll out later this year. Take my word for it, they are full of flavor and stay true to the quality Firehouse is known for. Get ready for some tasty goodness!

I can’t say enough about this impressive trip. Firehouse co-founder Robin Sorensen and his family were incredible hosts. The location was stunning, and the team who put it all together and produced the seamless trip were pros. I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to experience this once in a lifetime adventure and learn more about a company founded and headquartered in my hometown whose mission is not only to bring great food to the masses but to also help save countless lives through the Firehouse Public Safety Foundation, and with over 1,000 stores due to be in operation by the end of the year… that’s a whole lotta great!

Now… who’s hungry?

Until next time…
Enjoy the Journey!

Anna Maria Family Getaway | Mainsail Beach Inn Review

February 6, 2015 By Amy West

Amy West sitting on fishing pier on Anna Maria IslandSuppose you wanted to escape the stresses of this world and trade them in for a quiet piece of earth where water meets sand, and sun meets sky? Suppose you wanted to let your worries drift away on the wind as you unplugged from technology and reconnected with the ones you love? Watch your fantasy become reality in Anna Maria Island at Mainsail Beach Inn.

During a recent family trip we experienced the charm and intimate backdrop that is Anna Maria Island. Frequently praised by multiple sources as one of the best islands to visit, we had to see for ourselves just what made this little island such a unique spot. Mainsail Beach Inn’s casually chic accommodations created the perfect setting in which to take in the scope of the island.

Home Away From Home

Anna Maria Island is a small island situated just south of Tampa next to Bradenton, Fla. Tucked away on the west coast of the island is Mainsail Beach Inn, a luxurious beach resort offering two and three bedroom vacation rentals. The Inn sits along miles of pristine white beach and boasts breathtaking views of the sunset over the Gulf. The island is quite residential which gives your stay more of a home away from home vibe putting you in a mix of island time, and the feeling of being cozy in your favorite place. Mainsail’s hospitable staff bring that concept full circle, getting you fully up to speed with all the homey conveniences of your accommodations and welcoming you in with freshly made cookies.

Delight in the Details

From the heated pool, to the white sandy beaches, if you are looking to get active you’ve come to the right place. Take a kayak or paddleboard out for a turn and get close to nature watching for dolphins and sea life as you find balance on the water. For more adventure the island awaits. Parasailing, deep sea fishing, boat charters, and bike rentals are all within easy access on the island giving you plenty of opportunity to embrace the sun and connect with family through bonding experiences. When your day turns to dusk, gather around the table and challenge each other to a game or puzzle provided by the resort. From the inside out, Mainsail provides ample opportunity for you to explore the island and find the spark that brings the magic to your family time. We enjoyed a tour of the island and surrounding waterways through Seaduced Watercraft Adventures. Captain Larry regaled us with stories of the Island and its rich history and future.

Capture the Island Vibe

To experience the flavor of the island, taste the local fare at well known destinations like Beach Bistro (located directly across the street), or the Sandbar where you can secure a table right on the sand, or Mar Vista located on nearby Longboat Key. Make sure to visit AMI Donuts for their world famous made to order cake donuts where creations like Maple Bacon, Key Lime, and Sriracha tempt taste buds, not to mention raise a few eyebrows. When you are ready to bring home a treasure to remember visit the charming shops along Pine Avenue offering stylish island themed keepsakes. Walk one or both of Anna Maria’s piers and take in the expanse of the coastline and the crystal blue waters.

Timeless Style

Anna Maria’s community is committed to preserving the culture of the island and strives to keep that “Old Florida” style. You’ll find the skyline refreshingly empty of high rises, replaced instead by neighborly kindness and wholesome values. Mainsail Beach Inn’s dedication to that same philosophy makes them the ideal setting for your next escape.

Plan your next getaway for the Gulf Coast of Florida and discover the luxury, hospitality, and timeless charm of Mainsail Beach Inn, and Anna Maria Island.

Until then…

10 Things You Must Do on Scrub Island | Scrub Island Resort, Spa, Marina

December 19, 2014 By Amy West

Recently the man and I met up on a whirlwind trip to the exclusive private island in the BVI (British Virgin Islands). Home of Scrub Island Resort, Spa, and Marina, the island is both intimate and exotic. Luxuriously appointed suites create a village of sorts that flanks the open water and leads to the main pool deck and restaurants. Incorporated in to the design are a Dive Shop, Gift Shop, and a Supplies Shop that doubles as a deli. Private islands are the ideal escape from reality, but beyond R&R, what else do they have to offer? Here are 10 things you Must Do on Scrub Island.

10 Things You Must Do on Scrub Island

 Watch the Video here

1. Grab a Bite
With four different dining options on the island, you certainly don’t stand a chance going hungry. What better way to take in the flavor of the region than by grabbing a bite to eat? You could grab a sandwich at the Gourmet Market and Cafe and make it a picnic on the beach, or sit down for open air dining at Tierra! Tierra! overlooking the pool and sea. Enjoy fine dining offerings at Caravela, or get casual at One Shoe  Beach Bar & Grill. Whatever your mood or pace, enjoy exceptionally fresh fare at Scrub Island Resort.
2. Retreat to the Spa
Situated in a private Villa overlooking the ocean, Ixora Spa by L’OCCITANE is zen-like retreat. The perfect way to begin any trip, unwind during a couples massage, facial or one of their customized packages designed to meet your needs. Honored as a “Top 10 Spa” in Caribbean Travel and Life, Ixora has mastered the art of melting away your stress and rejuvenating the spirit.

3. Snorkel
Discover a magical world full of colorful creations under the surface of the water. Rent a snorkel kit for a nominal fee at the dive shop and lose yourself in hours of exploration beneath the azure waves.
4. Island Hop – Chartered Excursions
Take in the history of the BVI, catch that Big Fish, or soak up the sun from the deck of a catamaran all on one of the Chartered Excursions available from Scrub Island. Ask for details when you make your reservation and plan for a day at sea you’ll never forget.

5. Take a Dip in the Pool
The pool at Scrub Island is a multilevel masterpiece complete with infinity terrace and a slide. Enjoy some relaxation in the hot tub or see how fast you can jet down the slide, all while enjoying the iconic Caribbean seascape.

6. Offshore Sailing School
Always wanted to learn the craft of sailing? Sign up for Steve and Doris Colgate’s Offshore Sailing School and experience the freedom for yourself. For over 50 years the Offshore Sailing School has been teaching adventurers of all levels to improve their skills. Check it off your bucket list or add extra skills to your roster.
7. Honeymooner’s Beach
A private island with a private beach? Yes please! For sun and sand and complete privacy head to Scrub’s private stretch of beach. Snorkel, catch some rays, or just hang. It’s your call for the few hours you call this “best kept secret” your own.

8. Go for a Walk
Scrub is small enough to take in during a brisk walk in an hour or so. Get a 360 degree view of the majesty of the Caribbean and enjoy the romantic sunrise or sunset. Get a jog in or make it a relaxing stroll, whichever you decide, you’ll be inspired by what you find.

9. Go Shopping and Score some Swag
Take home a reminder of your epic getaway with some swag from Scrub’s gift shop. There is something inside for the whole family and the perfect souvenir for those waiting for you back home.

10. Jump Off the Dock
Do something spontaneous and maybe a little bit crazy. Get a running start and seize the day in this rite of passage on the island. Jump off the dock for a memorable experience everyone “must do” when at Scrub.

All this and so much more, from kayaking to scuba diving can be yours when you visit this outstanding resort. Get out there, say yes! Go experience all there is.

Until then…

Enjoy the Journey!
